Immigration officers have descended on the North Carolina city as part of President Donald Trump's growing crackdown on unauthorized immigration, according to official statements.

The operation, dubbed "The Charlotte Initiative", was revealed on Saturday, with authorities stating that "illegal immigrants with criminal records" would be the focus in the urban area.

"Federal authorities are sending immigration officers to the city to ensure Americans are safe and public safety threats are removed," a spokesperson stated.

City authorities, including Charlotte's mayor, published a joint statement criticising the campaign, saying it was causing "needless concern and instability" in the local population.

Armoured vehicles and special operations teams could be participating in the Charlotte area crackdown, according to internal government documents.

Several church members performing maintenance at a eastern Charlotte church fled into woods when authorities descended, with a person being apprehended, according to witness statements.

"We thought church was safe and nothing [was] gonna happen," a teenage observer commented.

Political Context

Since Trump's return to office, federal authorities have been sent to multiple cities including major metropolitan areas to implement the pledge of "the largest deportation programme" in the nation's records.

The DHS said they are carrying out the operation because the state has not honoured the approximately 1,400 Immigration and Customs Enforcement individuals in custody, meaning they had been discharged due to "local regulations".

City Status
