The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
